Wedding Cake Design Trends for 2024

Each year in December, I set out doing a search with all of the prominent wedding websites and consolidate a list of top wedding cake trends for the following year. I am so happy to see some of these trends are my favorite style of design. For 2024, minimalism is taking a backseat to more grandiose, elaborate designs. Couples are tired of the same designs over and over and would love to see some fresh new looks.

Let’s take a look at some of these trends ~

1) Cakes that are reaching towering heights. These multi-tiered cakes create a symbolism of abundance and celebration. They are visually stunning in their style.

2) Metallic accents – Gold and silver have always been great accents on wedding cakes and now more so in 2024. Taking these metallics to a new level by adding embellished pieces with gold or silver.

3) Texture, texture and mor texture! This is my favorite. I love textured cakes because they give such a unique and multi-dimensional look. Textures can be added in so many different ways using many different sugar mediums.

4) Pressed flowers – These are ever popular right now as an alternative to fresh flowers giving a more natural, earthy look to a cake.

5) Monochromic cakes – meaning layers of design all in one color, with some variant shades of the one color. This creates a beautiful, very classic and romantic look. This design can be achieved using bas relief, stenciled design, fondant molds and so many more techniques.

6) Ruffled cakes – ruffles upon ruffles give a glamourous look to wedding cakes, styling the cake to look like the wedding gown. The most popular mediums for these types of designs are fondant or wafer paper.

7) Sugar flowers/Wafer paper flowers – With society becoming more aware of toxins and healthier living, the trend of using fresh flowers on wedding cakes is on its way out. I have another blog post that addresses this exact topic right here. A safer alternative is using sugar flowers and wafer paper flowers on your wedding cake. These flowers can be made to look so realistic that in many cases, side by side you can’t tell the difference. These crafted flowers aren’t seasonal. You can get any flower you would like at any time of the year.

While many of these trends seem to pass on from year to year, the predominance of thinking outside the box in wedding design is very prevalent in the coming year. Gone are the days of buttercream rose swirls and Swiss dots. Hello new and exciting designs!
